Promoting Low-Carbon Material Circularity through World-Leading Recycled Aluminum Technology

LIXIL participated for the first time as a panelist in the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024. At the event, LIXIL introduced its initiatives for aluminum recycling and efforts towards realizing a decarbonized society.

“Japan’s Efforts for Building Decarbonization” in the Japan Pavilion
On November 18, LIXIL presented at the seminar “Japan’s Efforts for Building Decarbonization” which was held in the Japan Pavilion hosted by the Government of Japan to introduce Japan’s initiatives and technologies.

At the seminar, which included opening remarks by Keiichi Asao, Minister of the Environment, multiple companies and experts from the private sector discussed strategies to accelerate the impact of their decarbonization efforts in the building sector.

In our presentation, we highlighted our initiatives to reduce operational carbon emissions and embodied carbon emissions, including promoting the utilization of recycled aluminum, which has drawn attention from environmental experts for its notably reduced embodied emissions.

World-Leading Recycled Aluminum Technology: Our Efforts for Decarbonization with Circular Material
PremiAL R100, a 100% recycled aluminum building material, has been recognized for its significant impact in helping the environment and society.

Smelting new ingots requires a significant amount of electricity. However, using recycled aluminum can reduce 97% of CO₂ emissions from this process. PremiAL R100 has seen increased adoption across several facilities, retail outlets and various industries beyond the building and construction sector. The “PremiAL” series has also expanded production and adoption outside of Japan, contributing to sustainable urban development globally.

In addition, LIXIL introduced “revia,” a circular material utilizing recycled plastics, which further promotes circular economy innovations.

By participating in COP29, the world’s largest and most significant forum advocating for climate action, LIXIL aims to strengthen collaboration through innovative technology and solutions. LIXIL believes that cutting-edge developments such as PremiAL and revia can make an impact on both the environment and society through collaborations with stakeholders. We continue to accelerate our initiatives to realize decarbonization in the building sector.

    ■LIXIL’s ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY
    「Water Conservation & Environmental Sustainability」
LIXIL’s environmental strategy declared our Environmental Vision 2050 aims to realize “Zero Carbon and Circular Living.” We have stipulated three focus areas to achieve this vision: "Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation," "Water Sustainability," and "Promoting Circular Economy." Our initiatives extend beyond "Our Operations" at our production sites, offices, and sales bases, "Our Value Chain" through thoughtful innovations encompassing the entire value chain of products in relationship with end-users and business partners, and by creating value for society and the environment for today and tomorrow by "Expanding Our Impact."

In FYE2023, we started accelerating our efforts by “embedding robust environmental strategy” as a key strategic business initiative. In FYE2024, LIXIL became the first to receive SBT Net Zero approval for its long-term target to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 (base year: FYE2019).
